Changes to be expected with the launch of PMBOK Guide Sixth Edition

Changes to be expected with the launch of PMBOK Guide Sixth Edition

To support the broadening spectrum of project delivery approaches, PMI is offering a Sixth Edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) Guide. PMI also collaborated with the Agile Alliance to launch a new Agile Practice Guide that will offer a complete understanding of Agile practices. The new edition of the PMBOK® Guide contains information about agile; whereas the Agile Practice Guide serves as a bridge between the waterfall model and agile.

Every 4 to 5 years, PMI updates the PMBOK Guide with the latest practices in project management. Each knowledge area of the Guide will contain a section entitled Iterative and Adaptive Environments, Approaches for Agile, defining how these practices integrate into the project. The Guide will also contain detailed information on strategic and business knowledge, including information on the PMI Talent Triangle™, project management business documents and the critical skills required for success in today’s market.

The current Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification exam is based on current practices in the Project Management industry. As the project management practices are developing, so is the PMP exam. With the launch of the 6th edition of the PMBOK Guide, the PMP exam will change soon. These updates will ensure that the PMP exam is coordinated with the PMBOK® Guide.

What can be updated on the Exam?

Although the PMP certification exam is not a test of the PMBOK Guide®, it is the primary reference for the same. A few changes that we can expect with the new edition are changes in the lexicon and terminology used within the certification exam as well as harmonization of tools, techniques and process groups.

If you refer the PMBOK Guide® as a major study tool for the PMP exam, you can find the following updates in the sixth edition of the PMBOK Guide®:

  • Addition of a new chapter on the role of the project manager to an emphasis on leading projects effectively.
  • Change in the name of two Knowledge Areas to make it more accurately reflect which fundamentals can be managed:

* Time Management changed to Schedule Management

* Human Resource Management changed to Resource Management

All Knowledge Areas have four new sections:

  1. Key Concepts
  2. Tailoring Considerations
  3. Trends and Emerging Practices
  4. Considerations for Agile/Adaptive Environments

Few Facts to be considered

  • The PMP certification exam will be changed in the first quarter of 2018. However, the exact date is yet to be announced.

Aspirants taking the exam prior to Q1 2018 will get a chance to attend an exam that references the fifth edition of PMBOK Guide®.
